ABOUT US
We are an independent non-profit with a unique approach to peace.
The Peace School is the short name for the International Association for World Peace. We are an independent, 501c3 non-profit with no political or religious affiliations.
Through classes and activities, we provide tools for building individual and world peace. The Peace School is a United Nations Peace Messenger organization, recognized for our “significant and concrete contributions” to peace.
The Peace School first opened on North Clark Street in 1972. We moved to our beautiful Lincoln Avenue location in 1988 where we hold classes and family-friendly gatherings for peace, like our annual New Year’s Day celebration. Our core classes are Peace Breathing Meditation, Peace Yoga, Traditional Taekwondo and Self-Defense for Women.
Our focus in the early 1970s was on youth, with outreach programs in youth centers and universities. By the mid-1970s we created a program for senior adults and nursing home residents. In 1978 we founded Peace Day in Chicago, which continues to be our largest outreach program. We offer After School programs in schools, Peace Yoga classes in park districts and hospital affiliated wellness centers, and public workshops in collaboration with cultural gems like Lurie Garden and Chicago Children’s Museum.
Our online presence includes Peace Breathing Meditation practice sessions and live-streamed Peace Yoga classes. We offer a daily Call to Peace on social media, honoring one country and one Chicago neighborhood each day with our wishes, thoughts or prayers for peace.
